Venue Agreement Signed
Calgary, Alberta - November 16, 2007. The Paddle Association of Canada (PAC) has reached an agreement with the Calgary West Soccer Centre (CWSC) to stage the 2008 World Paddle Championships at their indoor facility. CWSC has everything needed for this event from playing surfaces to dressing rooms, food and beverage services, plenty of free parking, and highly important, a roof so the event will be unaffected in case of bad weather.
Bill Stamile, President of PAC, stated, "this is a huge step forward." He added, "we had the facility examined by a top coach from Argentina, Jorge Nicolini, and he was extremely confident it would exceed all the technical requirements for playing world championship paddle."
There will be four international glass courts installed in the centre for the event. The main court will feature seating for approximately 1000 spectators and standing room for many more, which is the traditional way to watch paddle. The three secondary courts will have seating for approximately 300 plus standing room. In addition to the courts there will be an “International Avenue” for sponsors and vendors to display and sell their products and an outdoor hospitality tent adjacent to the centre. A broadcast centre will also be set up to enable web casting and televised highlights of the action.
The CWSC was opened in December, 2004 and is a bubble building with 4 large indoor soccer fields. The facility is located at 11014 Bearspaw Dam Road NW.
